Time Flies...

DESCRIPTION

The year was 1931, it’s been 4 years since Charles Lindbergh accomplished the first solo transatlantic flight from New York City to Paris, France.

He contacts Longines to design a watch to aid future pilots in similar flights.

This watch was made to be used as a Global Positioning System(GPS) long before the invention of the Radar.

This watch is still being made today and is known as the Longines Lindbergh Hour Angle. Such a cool piece of history!

BRAND HISTORY

Founded in 1832 by Auguste Agassiz in St. Imier, Switzerland, Longines has a longstanding reputation as one of the oldest Swiss watch manufacturers. From its inception, the brand established itself as a pioneer in horology by focusing on precision and innovation.

The company's first in-house mechanism to ever produce was the 20H Calibre which was the first Chronograph Pocket Watch. Not a bad start. The movement used a monopusher mechanism for the chronograph. A true innovation for the Time.

Longines would go on to create even more innovations including the first pocket watch with dual time zones, the first wrist watch chronograph, and the first flyback chronograph with two pushers. All occurring between 1908 - 1925. A period of 22 years. Now that's getting busy.

Longines has a century-long history in the aviation field, starting in 1931 when the pilot Charles Lindbergh designed a watch to meet his specifications. He was inspired to design a watch after his famous 1927 transatlantic flight. He wrote a letter to Longines explaining a watch that could help future pilots navigate the skies. The result was the Hour Angle watch which was the first watch with an engraved rotating bezel. The Lindbergh watch was later produced by Longines, and a commemorative edition was issued in the 1980s.
