The Hamilton That Inspired The Design Of One Of The Most Coveted Watches From An American Independent Watchmaker
That Was A Mouthful.
In a recent Video from entrepreneur and legendary watch YouTuber, Teddy Baldassarre, He looked into the collection of American Master Watchmaker, Roland Murphy.
There were a lot of American classics in that collection, including a few from Roland's own company, RGM, An American Independent where Roland shows his true artisanship as a master watchmaker with beautifully decorated watches with an American aesthetic.
One of the RGM's he revealed, was something special. How the story goes, as explained in the video, Roland wanted to give a watch to his father to celebrate the launch of his first production watches of RGM.
He did not want to give away the actual first production watches since he needed the profits to keep the company afloat. He instead got an old Hamilton watch case and created an RGM Dial, Hands, and movement for the watch.
Now which Hamilton watch did he end up using? That's right, the Hamilton 9946. It was important for Roland to use a Hamilton since that's where he started in his career as a watchmaker.
One other unique part of this watch, it was completely assembled in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Further connecting to RGM since they're also based in Lancaster.
Of Course, that one-of-one masterpiece will never go on the market...

The Hamilton Watch Company was established in 1892 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The company was founded after Keystone Standard Watch Company was purchased from bankruptcy, and Aurora Watch Company of Illinois merged into Keystone. In the early years, Hamilton focused on manufacturing precise and reliable pocket watches. As the market for wristwatches grew after World War I, Hamilton pivoted to manufacturing wristwatches, becoming one of the earliest and most consistent creators of wristwatches.
Throughout its history, Hamilton has demonstrated innovation in design and technology. During World War II, the military valued the accuracy and durability of Hamilton's watches, and the company was the largest supplier of chronometer watches to the U.S. Armed Forces during WWII.

After the war, Hamilton continued to innovate and expand its product offerings. In the 1950s, the company introduced distinctive designs such as the Ventura, featuring the world's first electric watch movement. In 1966, the brand merged with the Swiss watch conglomerate SSIH (Société Suisse pour l'Industrie Horlogère), which later became the Swatch Group, a renowned Swiss watchmaking company.
